CPI Leader / Retired HOD of Commerce, DB College, Sasthamcotta
Born at Mavelikkara, in 1938, as the eldest son of Mr. P. Raghavan and Mrs. V. Thankamma and brought up there. He had his schooling in Govt. UPS Anjilipra and St. Johns H. S, Matham, Mavelikkara. He passed the SSLC Exam in First class, in 1954. He passed his Intermediate Examination in First Class, in 1956 from SN College, Kollam. Did his B.Com also in SN College, Kollam and recurred First Class, II Rank in 1963. He passed his M.Com Degree Exam in 1965 in First Class, Second Rank from FMN College, Kollam. Mr. Prasad had been getting Govt. Of India Merit Scholarship or Kerala University Merit Scholarship during his entire collegiate student career.
Mr. Prasad joined DB College, Sasthamcotta in 1966 as lecturer and was promoted as Professor and Head of the Dept. Of Commerce in 1972. He got married in 1972, the better half is Prof. K.P. Saradamany. He has two children, Dr. Preetha G Prasad and Prem G Prasad. He retired from service in March 1993. During his collegiate service, he erected a good tradition as an ideal professor and he is known as one of the best teacher in commerce.
He was an active leader of the AISF from 1954 to 1965 and held the posts of Secretary and President of the District Committee. He was elected secretary of the college union of the Sree Narayana College in 1961 – 62.
Prof. Gangaprasad was a militant activist of the AKPCTA, the only organisation of the Private College Teachers in the State during that period, and had been function as the state joint secretary since 1968. After the split of the organisation he joined PCTA and worked as state joint secretary till his retirement from service. (PCTA was re named later as KPCTU). He was in the fore front in all strikes and agitation of the private college teachers and played a decisive role in achieving direct payment of salary to private college teachers by the Govt in 1972. He alone performed excellent role as a member of the Board of Studies in Commerce (pass) of the University of Kerala.
He has been a member of the CPI since 1956 and has proved to be bold fighter and good organiser. He held several responsible positions in the party and has been a member of the Kerala State Council of the CPI since 1969. He was elected as a member of the Kollam District Council from Sooranad Division in 1991 with thumbing majority. He also served the Consumer Disputes Redresser Forum, Kollam, as a member.
He is associated with other social activities. Now he is a Director Board Member of the Kunnathoor Taluk Health Action group, Chairman of the Sasthamcotta Lake Protection Council and the Chairman of the Kollam District Paristhithi Ekopana Samithi.
