Description
Kallada Boat Race (The Kallada Jalotsavam) is one of the most famous boat races held in South Kerala, India. The boat race is an annual event in which almost all the famous snake boats (Chundanvallam) take part. The Jalamela is organised with a view to promoting tourism and also to encourage the spirit of water sports among the youth of Kerala , upholding the tradition of Gods own country. The Kallada Jalolsavam is conducted and celebrated with all Gaiety and Festive spirit at Muthiraparambu Karoothrakadavu course of the Kallada river in the Muneroethuruth Panchayath which is just less than half an hour drive away from Sasthamcotta.
This boat race is an annual event which happens 28 days after Onam (28 aam Onam). The winners will be awarded Rupees One lakh, Rupees Fifty thousand, rupees Twentyfive thousnd and rupees fifteen thousand respectively as first to fourth places. And rupees fifty thousand will be given to each team as bonus. It has also decided to form a special committee including the experts, to judge the perfomance of each team during the event, so as to increase the quality of the boat race. The boat race is conducted along the straight portion (nettayam) of Kallada River. The race can be conveniently viewed from the beautiful village Munroeisland (Munroethuruthu in vernacular). Munroethuruth or Munroe Island also spelled as Munrothuruthu is a beautiful place surrounded by Kallada River, Ashtamudi Lake and Sasthamkotta Lake in Kollam district, Kerala, India. Munroethuruth is about 25 km from Kollam by road and about 12 km from Sasthamcotta Lake.
