Padmashri. Dr. Sooranad P.N. Kunjan Pillai is a unbiased historian, perspicuous researcher, acclaimed lexicographer, blessed poet, eminent essayist, astute critic, great orator, noted socio – cultural leader, grammarian, educationist, learned saint and Scholar of Malayalam. He contributed about 100 works in various field of literature, spiritual and physical life for more than half a century. He was a member of Kendra Sahithya Academy and served as a member in the Indian Historical Records Commission representing Kerala. Meerut University conferred D.Lit on him.

He was born to Neelakanta Pillai and Karthiyanipillai Amma on 26th November 1911 in Sooranad South in Kollam District. He married Smt. Bhagavathi Amma in 1935. He is survived by three daughters and a son. His son Dr.K.Rajasekharan Nair is a famous Neurologist and Writer.

He did his schooling in Thevalakkara Malayalam School, Chavara English School, and later joined the Thiruvananthapuram Arts College. He took his Master’s in English in 1933 and subsequently mastered in Sanskrit(1934) and Malayalam (1935). He specialized in Archaeology also.He started his professional career as an English Teacher in St. Joseph School, Trivandrum and retired from Govt Service in 1971 as the Chief Editor of Malayalam Lexicon, University of Kerala, where he entered in 1953. He served as the Secretary of Text Book Committee; State Manuel Assistant; Asst Secretary to Govt for Education; Honorary Director, Kerala University Manuscripts Library; Member, Indian Historical Commission, Member, Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Kerala, Editor, Kerala Archives News Letter Board, Chief Advisor of Navasahithi Biographical Encyclopedia. He was Member of the Phd Evaluation Board of University of Kerala,He served as the President of Sahithya Parishad; Exe.Member of Sahitya Akademi, Kerala Sahitya Akademi, History Association; President, Kanfed; Editor,Journal of Indian History; Member of the first Jnanpith Award Committee.

Kunjan Pillai sir is a versatile writer of Malayalam who was written books in Malayalam, English and Sanskrit. He had a good knowledge in Tamil and Hindi too. He published his first work Smashanadeepam (Collected Poems) when he was in his school days. He has Prepared more than 150 text books for High School Classes. He has written more than 1000 Forewords and blessed the Celebrated Contemporary writers of Malayalam. Apart from all these he will be remembered by the future generation through his World famous Malayala nikhandu (Malayalam Dictionary)

He was given the title ‘Sahithya Nipunan’ by Kochi Maharajah. In 1984 he was honored with Padmashri by [Govt. of India]. He received the Fellowship of Kerala Sahitya Akademy.Fellow of the History Association. Was honored with D.Litt by the University of Meerut in 1991 and University of Kerala in 1992. Bagged the Vallathol Puraskaram in 1992 and received the First Ezhuthachan Puraskaram instituted by Govt. of Kerala in 1994. He died in 1995 March 8, at Thiruvananthapuram (aged 83).
