Karkkidakavavubali at Sasthamcotta Lake

Sasthamcotta Lake is one of the most prominent places for bali tharpan in the State. Thousands of people, including women and children, offered ‘bali’ at specially arranged ‘balippura’ on the banks of the Sasthamcotta Lake. Hindus believe that the ritual performed on the new moon day in the month of Karkidakom will propitiate the spirits of their forefathers and bring good fortune in the year ahead. made elaborate arrangements for the event, popularly known as ‘Karkkidaka vavu bali,’ People from different areas of Kollam district thronged the Lake side and Temple at Sasthamcotta from early morning and the ‘bali’ rites continued till the afternoon. Many people performed the rites on their own, while others sought the help of temple priests. It is believed that Lord Rama offered pitrutarpan at this sacred place in the presence of Shri Dharma Sastha.
